Voices From Our Community

The biggest stress for a parent of a special needs child is the plan for who is going to care for them when we cannot. The fact that HCL exists is just truly amazing. We feel part of a community and know that many people are looking out for them and love them as if they were their own. Before coming to HCL, our boys had limited friendships/social activities outside of their day program. Besides participating in Special Olympics, they did not have much going on in the afternoons and it was challenging for us to find social outlets. We can see that our boys are flourishing now because they are having fun participating in all the activities provided by HCL and we are so grateful. We feel very, very fortunate.

Moving to HCL and learning to live more independently with other caregivers besides Mom and Dad has allowed her to grow in ways we never knew she would. She thrives there. Between the infrastructure, caring staff at HCL, and her other caregivers, her needs are met, she is safe, and she is very happy.

It’s the little things. Properly taking food from a buffet (well, sometimes). Walking to get mail. Participating in group events like yoga and karaoke. Getting ready for bed and then getting up and ready for the day ahead. They are small gains that mean a lot. The needs that HCL fulfills do not stop at our doors. Every city needs an “HCL” so their special residents can also thrive. The need is endless and from our experience, the gains that residents can make are endless too.

Because of HCL, my loved one is very happy, relaxed and continuing to grow in independence. It’s been great to have such a variety of social activities available on site. It’s also much easier for my loved one to engage with other residents for socializing.
